5_Pains And Ailments

Pregnancy Pains can appear at different times throughout your pregnancy, along with various other forms of pregnancy ailments. Although they can often prove to be quite unnerving, there is more often than not a fairly plausible reason for why it is happening. Listed below are some of the more common pregnancy pains and the reason why they may appear. If, however, you are at all unsure of the pain or it feels unsettling then always contact your GP or midwife who will be able to check you over and offer professional council.

Pregnancy Back Pain

Around 3 in every 4 women will suffer with pregnancy back pain and it tends to occur later on in the third trimester. This is mainly due to the excess weight that is being carried around and further strain is placed on the lower back due to the shift in your ‘center of gravity’.

The pregnancy hormone, progesterone, which also loosens your joints and ligaments that attach your pelvic bones to your spine in order to make enough room for your baby can be an added factor to fatigue pain you may be feeling.

There are normally 2 types of recognized back ache known as lumbar pain and posterior pelvic pain and some pregnant women suffer with both. Lumbar pain occurs just above the waist in the lower back around your spine. This could also be a type of pain that you may have experienced prior to pregnancy in which case it is now being aggravated by the extra weight.

Posterior pelvic pain is more commonly endured in pregnancy and occurs a little lower in the back and often runs into your buttocks or down your thighs. Everyday movement, climbing stairs or bad walking and sitting posture can trigger this type of aching.

If the pain is severe and takes the form of shooting pains down your legs then this may be due to ‘sciatica’. See Pregnancy Leg Pain.

Pregnancy Leg Pain

Pains in your legs can often take the form of shooting pains, this may be due to ‘sciatica’. This only usually affects a very small percentage of pregnant women. It is caused by the sciatic nerve in your lower back being trapped either by the heavy weight of your uterus or a bulging or slipped disc in the lower spine. The pain from sciatica will often be felt all the way down your legs right through to your toes and a sensation of tingling, pins and needles or numbness may also be felt within legs.
